When it comes to entertainment, I have learned from experience that there are a few things you need to consider:

– know your guests
– know your atmosphere
– create a good flow

While working in retail, I learned that sometimes it is not about buying what you like but what your customers like and want. The same theory applies to an event. You and your fiance may be into salsa or hip hop but consider your guests – do they like that style of music? Will they appreciate a mariachi band and flamenco dancers?

Ask yourselves the following questions prior to booking your musical entertainment:

– what is the average age of guests at the wedding?
– do our guests enjoy new things? or are they a traditional bunch?
– do our guests like to dance? or is music simply background for a more lounge-oriented crowd?
– are we planning a themed event?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine the right type of entertainment for your event. Remember that if guests don’t like the style of music you have selected – it may be an issue to get them on the dance floor.

Here are a few options to consider:

DJ | the popular and most versatile choice for a wedding. Having a great DJ that can read the crowd and play music to get people our of their seats and on the dance floor is a must-have for a great party. A few local DJ heroes: Prodigy Entertainment, Hello DJ, Sounds of Distinction, Enjoi DJ Outfit, Third From The Sun

Live Band | (one of my favourite choices) – if you like live music, nothing beats this choice for entertainment. A great alternative to a DJ – when selecting a band be sure they have some versatility and can play a range of musical styles. Single-genre bands are great for themed events but it might be hard to get grandma dancing to an only-80s style band. A few local crews that will get your crowd dancing: Graham Howes Band, Shugga, Grooveyard, Snooky Tynes Family Band

Harpist/Mariachi Band/Jazz Pianist | a great choice for cocktail hour. Want to offer guests a variety of musical styles, choose a classic mood or liven-it up with some Latin music while guests mingle and enjoy cocktails prior to the reception. Local good guys and gals: Sandra Fann, Carlo Coppola, Sara Dell

Closing Tip | If you want your guests dancing…you have to get on the dance floor! After all, the wedding celebration is all about the couple so if you are dancing then your guests will be too!

I mentioned I did not have enough time to do all the shopping I wanted to but I was able to pick up a few delectable items – my most favourite treasure…a beautifully, hand-crafted headpiece by David Dunkley of KC’s Hats. I was first introduced to David’s incredible creations at The Wedding Show a couple of years ago – I have been craving a piece since and David so generously let me model a few pieces during The Spring Show. The one I decided on is absolutely stunning & part of his newest collection. I encourage all fashionistas, brides, ladies to make time for a visit with David – every girl deserves one of these creations!!

My obsession with paper continues – I picked up an Invitation Mock-Up Sampler kit from The Paper Place – Judith is so encouraging and I hope to make her proud with my creation (stay tuned for a post on putting together your own invite using this kit) and my little Letterpress Journal from Snap & Tumble.

Looking for Mother’s Day Gifts or reasonably-priced, locally made favours for your wedding – look no further than Liloo at home. The creative and lovely, Sapna Alim, has been busy creating a house-brand line of products. I spent some time at her booth – sniffing, smelling, touching – her products are outstanding. Here is a sampling of what I picked up – Loose Leaf Tea, Aromatic Bath Salts, Whipped Shea Body Butter and handmade, natural soap. I got a medley of flavours and aromas because I could not choose just one! Decadent!

On Saturday, the lounge, dining room and underground at The Drake Hotel came alive with The Wedding Co‘s Spring Wedding Show. This was the first event of this style – where indie meets couture – a one day event showcasing 40 unique, chic & edgy wedding vendors.

I have been working with Catherine on this event for the past couple of months and as always, it was wonderful to watch her vision come alive. These wedding professionals are so creative, talented, unique and absolutely fabulous – I just cannot say enough about them. I had a moment to capture a few images – sadly, my camera battery died before I could make it all the way around the venue. From Top to Bottom: the chalkboard entrance; the transformed lounge space; Loic Gourmet; Ecstatic Accessory Designs; Cecelia Hayes; Papillion Press; Little Party Goers; Avril Loreti; view of the dining room & the beautiful Carla Naylor, Faces By Carla.

This collaboration between Laura K Designs, Allyson Meredith Cakes and Bobbette & Belle features a table display that demonstrates the possibilities of creating a theme by carrying the motif from the invitation onto the cake, table decor and favours. Beautiful!

Not a visitor could resist this display – Naughty Cakes by Konstadin. This lovely lady is talented beyond belief and it shows that she had a lot of fun creating some ‘edgy’ pieces to exhibit at this show. These cakes are great for bachelorette parties and stags.

What a truly fun and inspiring event! I unfortunately did not have enough time as I would have liked to shop but I got some fabulous ideas and will definitely be sourcing out many of these vendors for accessories, favours, decor, sweets, treats and more in the future! Well done to all who exhibited and as always – a pleasure working with you!
